Des, one of my best friends in life, got married recently. Instead of having one best man, he picked three best men. Each of us decided to give a small speech. I had mine written down, but I did my best to memorize it. I got most of the way through it before I got choked up and forgot the last few lines and had to refer to my notes. All in all, I thought it turned out well.
Since I have it written down, I decided to post it here. So this is for Des, in case he forgets what I said, he can always read it again here.
All of us up here in the tuxes have been friends for a long time. Des was unable to pick one best man so he gave the honor to all three of us. Therefore, each of us would like to say a little something.
Des and I have been friends for over 18 years. In fact, I was thinking about this. 18 years. Our friendship is old enough to vote and buy cigarettes. But, our friendship doesn’t smoke, so that’s okay.
I’ve been thinking about this speech for a while now and I’ve been having trouble putting our friendship into words. We practically grew up at each other’s houses. We were friends from sixth grade through high school. Then I went away to college and after college moved even further away. Yet our friendship has always remained strong.
Heather has been a part of your life for a long time, and therefore a part of mine. I cherish the memories we all have together and look forward to many more. You couldn’t have found a more perfect girl to spend the rest of your life with. Congratulations to you both.
Des, may you put the same amount of effort into your marriage as you have your friendships, and may it be as effortless.
